Visa Types

Visa type must correspond with the purpose of the trip. For example a tourist visa is meant for holiday trips only and cannot be used to attend a conference or business meetings. The Embassy will decide the correct visa type based on the application.

1. Tourist visa

For a short visit to India for the purposes of tourism you can apply for a tourist visa, which is typically valid for six months. To apply for a tourist visa you must submit the following:

  • duly filled in online application form with two signatures, one on the first page under the photo and one at the bottom of the second page
  • passport that is valid for at least six months from the submission of the application and that has at least two blank pages left
  • one colour photo (5 X 5cm) (photo requirements) pasted on the application form (please note that for now, a paper photo is required even if you have scanned your photo on the application form)
  • receipt of the payment of the visa fee
  • other than Finnish and Estonian nationals: a document obtainable from the local register office stating how long you have lived in Finland

Certain restricted areas in India (e.g. Andaman Islands, Sikkim) require visitors to produce a special permit in addition to a valid visa. Applications for Restricted Area Permits (see Visa Forms) can be submitted together with the visa application. The fee for the permit is 38€, which is added to the visa fee. For some areas the permit can also be applied for in India. The Embassy can grant the permit for the maximum period of two weeks.

2. Business visa

Business visa is meant for persons visiting India on business. It is typically valid for one year. Other than Finnish or Estonian nationals can apply for a business visa only after having lived in Finland/Estonia for more than two years. To apply for a business visa you must submit the following:

  • duly filled in online application form with two signatures, one on the first page under the photo and one at the bottom of the second page
  • passport that is valid for at least six months from the submission of the application and that has at least two blank pages left
  • one colour photo (5 X 5cm) (photo requirements) pasted on the application form (please note that for now, a paper photo is required even if you have scanned your photo on the application form)
  • receipt of the payment of the visa fee*
  • letter from the employer stating the status of the employee, the purpose and duration of the trip and a company guarantee of financial responsibility for expenses incurred during the trip. The letter must also mention the period for which the visa is applied (e.g. one-year business visa with multiple entries): if only one business trip is mentioned, then the visa will be granted for the duration of that trip.
  • invitation from India (even the invitation letter must mention the period for which the visa is applied)
  • other than Finnish and Estonian nationals: a document obtainable from the local register office stating how long you have lived in Finland

NB! Business visa for 12 months or less: the fee must be paid beforehand and a receipt of the payment must be attached to the application. If you apply for a visa for a longer period than one year, do not make the payment yet! You will be informed of the correct visa fee after a decision has been made based on your application. The duration of the visa is determined by Indian authorities.

3. Employment visa

Employment visa may be granted to persons who are employed either by a Finnish or an Indian company and plan to work in India for longer periods at a time. An employment visa is valid for a maximum of one year. Accompanying family members must apply for an entry visa. For the entry visa, another letter from the employer giving the names of the family members is required. To apply for an employment visa you must submit the following.

  • copy of your employment contract
  • invitation from India: Certificate of Incorporation

Do not make the payment yet! You will be informed of the correct fee after your application has been reviewed.

4. Student visa

Persons pursuing regular studies in India either as an exchange student or a degree student can apply for a student visa for the period of study. To apply for a student visa you must submit the following:

  • duly filled in online application form with two signatures, one on the first page under the photo and one at the bottom of the second page
  • passport that is valid for at least six months from the submission of the application and that has at least two blank pages left
  • one colour photo (5 X 5cm) (photo requirements) pasted on the application form (please note that for now, a paper photo is required even if you have scanned your photo on the application form)
  • exchange students: a guarantee letter from the Finnish school
  • a letter of approval from the Indian school

Do not make the payment yet! You will be informed of the correct fee after your application has been reviewed.

5. Transit visa

Transit visa allows a person to travel via India to another destination. It is typically a double-entry visa valid for 15 days from the day it is granted, and it allows for a continuous stay in India of no more than 72 hours.

NB! A transit visa is not issued for any specified dates. Its validity begins from the day of issue, and therefore the 15 days’ validity may not be enough for the applicant’s travel plans. It is recommended that a six month tourist visa is applied for instead well before the estimated date of travel to avoid any complications.

To apply for a transit visa you must submit the following:

  • duly filled in online application form with two signatures, one on the first page under the photo and one at the bottom of the second page
  • passport that is valid for at least six months from the submission of the application and that has at least two blank pages left
  • one colour photo (5 X 5cm) (photo requirements) pasted on the application form (please note that for now, a paper photo is required even if you have scanned your photo on the application form)
  • copies of the flight tickets

Do not make the payment yet! You will be informed of the correct fee after your application has been reviewed.

6. Conference visa

A conference visa must be applied for by persons wanting to attend a conference in India. The visa is valid for the duration of the conference. To apply for a conference visa you must submit the following:

  • duly filled in online application form with two signatures, one on the first page under the photo and one at the bottom of the second page
  • passport that is valid for at least six months from the submission of the application and that has at least two blank pages left
  • one colour photo (5 X 5cm) (photo requirements) pasted on the application form (please note that for now, a paper photo is required even if you have scanned your photo on the application form)
  • personal invitation from India
  • copy of the conference agenda
  • No Objection Letter issued by the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to the conference organizers
  • No Objection Letter issued by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to the conference organizers

Do not make the payment yet! You will be informed of the correct fee after your application has been reviewed.

7. e-Tourist Visa

The e-Tourist Visa is applied before travelling: first, the applicant fills in an online application form to obtain an electronic travel authorisation and pays the visa fee online. Once the application has been approved, the applicant will receive an e-mail authorising him/her to travel to India. This authorisation must be printed and brought along when travelling.

The eTV is valid for 30 days from the date of arrival. The electronic travel authorisation must be applied no earlier than 30 days and no later than 4 days prior to the planned travel date.

The eTV is meant mainly for tourism purposes. For special visas, the application should still be made beforehand at the Embassy. Holders of diplomatic or official passports must apply at the Embassy.

A link to the online application form can be found here. This application is not sent to the Embassy, nor is the visa fee paid to the Embassy account. The eTV applications are not processed at the Embassy at any stage.

Please visit the visa information pages of the Government of India to see which nationalities and airports are included in the eTV scheme.

NB! When applying for eTV, uploading your photo is mandatory. Be sure to check the photo requirements. You must also upload a scanned image of your passport's data page.

8. Express visa

In an emergency, an express visa may be applied by Finnish and Estonian citizens. Express processing takes a day and a half: if you submit the application on a weekday at 9–12, you may collect your passport on the following weekday at 15–16.30. The express fee of 43€ is to be paid in addition to the normal visa fee. To apply for an emergency visa a letter of clarification in English (Application for emergency visa) must be included. NB! Application for express visas cannot be submitted by post.

9. Other visas

In case of other visas (e.g. research visas, medical visas, voluntary work) applicants are advised to contact the Consular Section.

NB! Grant or rejection of visas is at the discretion of the Embassy. Visa fees are not refunded even when an application is rejected.
