want to travel to India and I need a visa. What should I do?

When applying for a visa to India, please submit the following at the Embassy of India:

  • application form duly filled in and printed, with two signatures and one colour photo 5 X 5 cm (see photo requirements)
  • passport that is valid for at least six months from the submission of the application and that has at least two blank pages left
  • tourist visa for 6m or less/business visa for 12m or less: receipt of the visa fee deposited to the Embassy bank account (see Visa Fees )
  • other visa types: Do not pay the visa fee beforehand! You will be informed of the fee once your application has been checked.
  • required attachments (see Visa Types )

You must leave your passport at the Embassy for the processing; the visa is a sticker that will be pasted in the passport. Please remember that visa validity begins on the day of printing.

If you apply for any other visa than six-month tourist visa or one-year business visa, do not pay the visa fee beforehand. You will be notified of the correct fee after your application has been checked. You can then deposit the fee to the Embassy account and send the receipt of the payment via email.

Applications and attachments are not returned to the applicant. If you need the original documents yourself, please be sure to attach only copies.

Where will I find the application form and how can I fill it in?

The visa application form no longer exists in paper form. Applicants must fill in the form online and send it electronically through the programme, then print the form and submit it at the Embassy. The printed form must be signed twice, on both pages.

The application programme does not accept my answers/will not move on to the next page/goes blank when I try to save or print it. What can I do?

The application programme is maintained from India. You can inform the Embassy of any recurring errors through e-mail, but unfortunately we cannot help with techical issues on the phone.

Here are a few possible solutions for problems:

  • If the programme does not accept the dates you have entered: enter incorrect dates and correct them on the printed form with a post it note.
  • Always enter dates using the slash character: 19/11/2015
  • Google Chrome and Apple devices are not always compatible with the programme. Try with a different browser/device.
  • If you cannot print the form immediately, save it as a PDF file to be printed later. If you can't do this, you can print the form using the FINH-code and your passport data on Indian Visa Online

Sometimes the only option is to start over on another day. You can have several incomplete or complete applications in the international database: only the one you actually print will be registerd with the Embassy.

How will I know the right visa type for my trip?

The most common visa types are tourist visa (holiday trips) and business visa (business trips). If you are uncertain as to the correct visa type (for example practical training included in degree studies), choose whichever visa type you believe is closest to your purpose when filling in the application form. The visa type can later be changed by the Embassy if necessary.

How much does a visa cost and how can I make the payment?

Visa fee depends on the visa type and on the applicant's nationality. Fees are listed under Visa Fees.We only accept payments made via bank transfer. Please attach a copy of the receipt of the payment to your application. The receipt of the payment must have the following information: the account number of the recipient, the sum deposited, the entry date and the archive ID. In the message field you must quote the full name (all given names and surname) of the applicant, visa type and file number (FINH + 8 numbers). All this information must show on the printed receipt. It cannot be added by hand. No more than four applications should be paid with one bank transfer.

Tourist visas for six months or less and business visas for 12 months or less must be paid beforehand, with a receipt of the payment attached to the application. For other visa types, do not pay the visa fee beforehand. You will be notified of the correct fee after your application has been checked. You can then deposit the fee to the Embassy account and send the receipt of the payment via email.

Visa fees are not refunded even when an application is rejected. Grant or rejection of visas is at the sole discretion of the Embassy.

What are the Embassy opening hours?

Application submission: Mon–Fri at 9.00–12.00 (applications are not accepted outside these hours)
Collection of passports: Mon–Fri at 15.00–16.30
Calling hours: Mon–Fri at 12.00–13.00

Must I collect my visa and passport in person?

If you cannot collect your passport yourself, someone else may do it for you. Passports are delivered against the visa receipt issued by the Consular Section staff or against an authorisation letter signed by the applicant. The passports are stored alphabetically according to the name that is the first in the passport. The authorisation letter should also be given with this name.

I don't live in the capital area. Can I apply through post?

The visa application with required attachments, photo and passport can be sent to Embassy of India, Consular Services, Kulosaarentie 32, 00570 Helsinki. Please note that it is not possible to apply through post if you do not live in Finland/Estonia. Make sure to read the instructions for Applying Through Post ! Express handling cannot be applied through post. Applications and attachments are not returned to the applicant. If you want to keep the originals, send us only the copies.

How long does it take to process the application?

Processing times vary. For other than Finnish/Estonian applicants, the procedure may take several weeks, so be sure to submit your application well in advance.

What can I do if I need to travel very urgently?

Finnish and Estonian applicants can apply for emergency handling. The processing time is one and a half working days and the express fee of 43€ must be paid in addition to the visa fee. An additional letter is required for the application giving the reason for desired express handling.

I have questions regarding my visa application but I have received no answer to my e-mail or phone calls. What can I do?

Unfortunately our telephone lines and e-mail are extremely busy especially during the busiest travelling months. Always look through the information provided on this website to find an answer to your question. Calling hours on visa matters are on weekdays at 12–13. You can also stop by during customer service hours on weekdays at 9–12 or 15–16.30.
